How AspireAssist Can Help You Transform

By July 27, 2018 No Comments

No one weight loss journey is the same for everyone, and you may have already tried a few different things in your quest for the NEW You. Sometimes things don’t work out on the first attempt. The good news is with weight loss, there are many more options to try. If you’ve given dieting and exercise your all and find that you still are having a hard time losing weight and keeping it off, options like the AspireAssist may be just the right tool to help you achieve your goal. Read on to find out more about the procedure and the tool, and if it’s the right option for the NEW You.

Is the AspireAssist Right for Me?

Essentially, the AspireAssist helps you aspirate. After a meal, you are able to remove roughly 30% of your meal directly into the toilet by using a small pump that attaches to a port (made by the procedure) on your skin. The only way to aspirate effectively is to slowly chew your food completely and thoroughly, which allows the equipment to work and expel nearly a third of your meal. Chewing food slowly and taking your time is a good eating habit that helps you feel full more quickly, allowing you to eat less. This is a good practice to take with you after you no longer need the equipment. The AspireAssist is not a permanent solution–most patients use it for about a year.

The AspireAssist is ideally for adults only (age 22 and over), who have tried other weight loss options with minimal or no success. The AspireAssist patients have a BMI between 35 and 55, and have not had gastric bypass or gastric sleeve surgery. For patients who have had a gastric band, consultation is necessary to see if you qualify.

What Is the Procedure Like?

When it comes to any type of invasive procedure, patients should know all of the details prior to their visit so that they know what to expect. The AspireAssist procedure is just that–an office visit. Under twilight sedation, a tube is placed in your stomach and connected to the Skin-Port, which is a small button implanted on the surface of your skin. The tube remains in the inside wall of your stomach for the duration of the time you use the AspireAssist. The tube, known as the A-tube, is inserted during one procedure, and the Skin-Port is attached about a week later. Both procedures are very quick and painless, and patients can easily return home or back to activities as soon as they wish. The equipment can be removed at any time in roughly 10 minutes, with another short office visit.

To use the AspireAssist, you wait 20 to 30 minutes after each meal, visit the restroom, and attach the included equipment (known as the Connector, Companion, and Reservoir), and begin to aspirate. Each aspiration visit takes about 10 minutes to complete. All of the pieces are seamless to use and clean afterward, and replacement parts and pieces are always available from the office. Your doctor and support staff will thoroughly review exactly how to use all parts of the AspireAssist, so you have clear instructions before going home.

What Are the Outcomes and Benefits?

As with any weight loss plan, procedure, or surgery, there are expected outcomes, risks, and benefits. In a clinical study, the risk of serious side effects were very low. Some patients reported less serious side effects, such as abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting after the procedure, but this same study showed that patients were able to reduce their caloric absorption after meals by up to 30%, with overall weight loss success. Patients lost up to three times more weight with the AspireAssist than with just diet and exercise alone.

However, there are some things to keep in mind. The most successful patients were dedicated to aspiration, which means faithfully using the AspireAssist after every meal, with few exceptions. Also, as the AspireAssist is meant for use for a year or slightly more, it’s strongly advised that patients find healthier eating habits and lifestyle choices to take with them after the tube is removed. The need to eat slowly and chew thoroughly is a necessity to use the AspireAssist–and it’s a great habit to keep. Many patients also take part in weight loss or behavioral counseling to help identify triggers and practice healthier habits.
