What Is Gastric Sleeve Surgery?

Gastric sleeve surgery is a popular option for treating obesity. Considered a bariatric surgical procedure, gastric sleeve helps patients lose weight by restricting the amount of food held by their stomach. Gastric sleeve is the surgical removal of a certain percentage of the stomach, making it smaller. Those who’ve undergone the procedure would easily feel full even after taking only small portions of food. Because the patient’s food intake will be limited after gastric sleeve, weight loss is achieved at a rapid rate. Learn more about gastric sleeve surgery:

What others find unnerving about gastric sleeve surgery are its irreversible results. Since gastric sleeve shrinks your stomach, your body is also prevented from absorbing as many minerals and vitamins as it used to. This can result in different health problems. Fortunately, our alternative to gastric sleeve surgery addresses this concern.

What Is ESG, Our Alternative to Gastric Sleeve Surgery?

The ESG is an incisionless weight loss procedure wherein the stomach is reconfigured to become a banana-shaped “sleeve.” Some parts of the process of ESG resemble those of gastric sleeve surgery, but they differ greatly.

ESG and gastric sleeve both reduce the size of the stomach and have it adopt a sleeve shape, promoting early satiety and, by extension, weight loss. However, the similarities end there. Unlike gastric sleeve surgery, ESG is nonsurgical. This means that no external incisions are involved in the procedure, making it the safer and more ideal path to weight loss than gastric sleeve surgery.

ESG: How This Alternative to Gastric Sleeve Surgery Works

This gastric sleeve surgery alternative is performed using a flexible endoscope. A small camera is inserted into the throat to access the stomach, allowing the doctors to see inside the organ without having to cut open the entire abdomen. From there, they proceed with the reconfiguration of the stomach, lowering its capacity for food.

This alternative to gastric sleeve surgery puts patients on a limited liquid diet and semisolid foods, following the initial recovery. Patients are expected to retain this diet until they can transition back to a normal one.

Who Is Our Gastric Sleeve Alternative For?

Our alternative to gastric sleeve surgery, ESG, is for people who haven’t been successful with other weight loss methods. ESG is also for those who want to experience the results of gastric sleeve surgery but in a safer and nonsurgical way. Nonetheless, note that this alternative to gastric sleeve surgery isn’t for everyone with weight loss problems.

Consider a screening and consultation at New You Weight Loss to learn if our gastric sleeve surgery alternative would be good for you. Our staff is always ready to assist with our patients’ weight loss concerns.

Here are the services that we have performed:

  • ORBERA® Managed Weight Loss System

The ORBERA® Managed Weight Loss System is designed for moderately overweight people who are having difficulty losing weight through diet and exercise.

During this nonsurgical procedure, a small silicone balloon is placed inside a patient’s stomach. This balloon consumes space in the stomach to make a patient feel full faster. He or she will also get used to having to eat smaller servings of food. Patients who undergo this exercise may see a big difference lose more weight compared to those who just rely on exercise and eating healthy.

  • Obalon

The physician will first evaluate a patient to check whether he or she is qualified for
Obalon, or if any potential risks are expected. This nonsurgical procedure is designed for individuals with a body mass index (BMI) of 30–40.

During this procedure, a patient will swallow a capsule, which will release a balloon that will take up space in the stomach. Three lightweight balloons will be inserted over the course of a three month timeline. These balloons will be taken out six months after the first one is placed.

  • ESG (Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty)

This nonsurgical procedure reduces a patient’s stomach size to help promote weight loss. The doctor uses an endoscope with a suturing system that allows stitches to be placed in the stomach. The surgery, which usually takes about 60–90 minutes, may limit how much you eat, reducing the amount of calories you’re getting daily. ESG is designed for patients with a minimum BMI of 30. However, individuals with stomach problems, such as ulcer and gastric cancer, and those who had prior surgery cannot undergo this procedure due to potential risks.

AspireAssist lets patients safely remove food from their stomach after their meals. This is a nonsurgical procedure, which may take approximately 15 minutes, is designed for people with a BMI of 35–55. Individuals who are having difficulties losing weight through dieting and exercise are also qualified for this treatment.

An experienced gastroenterologist will insert a small tube into a patient’s stomach, leaving a port on the skin. After every meal, the patient may go to the restroom and connect a small pump. This device will be responsible for taking out food, which will go directly to the toilet. This process may take up to 10 minutes.

Aside from removing food, this treatment also promotes healthy eating habits. This is because it is expected for individuals who undergo this treatment to drink more liquids and chew food thoroughly when they eat.
